A stand desk that is also a hydroponic vertical garden.
Hydroponics is awesome. It can grow incredibly healthy and nutritious food. Stand desks are healthier than sitting down at traditional desk, therefore this DIY hydroponic stand desk vertical garden is quite possibly one of the healthiest desks out there! You can literally eat fresh picked salad while standing at your desk working.
How it is made.
In order to create this super healthy hydroponic stand desk we utilized the existing framework of a previous indoor hydroponic build project, The SFT Hydroponic Build Project. This Shallow Flow Technique system was designed for implementation in front of some large windows that get decent light throughout the day. It does utilize an induction grow light which provides a nice bright full spectrum light source that is great for lighting up your work and growing plants. Without a window this system probably would require a bit more growing light for the lower section so keep that in mind if you want to put one inside without a window. The addition of the stand desk feature was a very simple addition to the original plans ( Available here ).
Cost to build?
if you are so inclined. The actual stand desk portion of the project only cost $14 of additional materials.
To build the entire system will depend on fluctuating materials costs for materials such as lumber, pvc, and desired fittings. A grow light is an expensive but essential and well worth it part of the system. The plans mentioned at the link above and under the eBooks/Plans section contain a detailed parts list as well as drawings of how it is constructed. Creating this can be a fun DIY project if you are so inclined. The actual stand desk portion of the project only cost $14 of additional materials. The low cost was accomplished because we had left over polyethylene plastic from the original portion of the SFT build project. Only a few boards, screws, and “L” brackets were required. So if you are purchasing the plastic to make the tank cover and shelf be sure to keep the left overs from the full-size sheet you needed to buy from your plastics supplier. We ended up with about a good size section left over for another who-knows-what fun project.
How to build your stand desk.
You could always buy the above plans and then hand them over to a skilled craftsman to build the whole system for you. There is a real sense of accomplishment building something yourself though. If you do build the whole SFT hydroponic vertical garden then turning it into a stand desk will be quite simple, just build a shelf using the mentioned “L” brackets and boards to span the distance. Be sure to provide adequate support for the polyethylene plastic desk portion that hangs over the side. Remember to make use of a bubble level. You can size the desk portion according to who will be standing at it. Remember measure twice, cut once. Have fun and stay healthy!
